Wallpaper of the Week – Solid

This is the sixth edition of Wallpaper of the Week here at Design Informer. This week’s wallpaper is entitled Solid. The wallpaper was designed by none other than myself. This is a personal wallpaper that I experimented with about two months ago. It’s perfect for those who want a simple and dark wallpaper for their desktop.

sol⋅id – [sol-id]

Having three dimensions (length, breadth, and thickness), as a geometrical body or figure. Of or pertaining to bodies or figures of three dimensions.

A couple of months ago, I decided that I wanted to become a better designer. I then came to the conclusion that in order to do so, I would need some practice. I decided to design a wallpaper everyday for one month. This is one of the wallpapers that I made.

The initial concept was to just use Gotham, one of my favorite fonts, into the design. I wanted to create a wallpaper with the word, "Solid." After trying out different things, I then modified the font quite a bit. I added some texture to the background to add some depth to the wallpaper. One thing led to another and after having a lot of fun with Photoshop, I made a decision that it was time to stop and that the wallpaper was complete.

Quick Summary

  • Estimated time: 3 hours
  • Font: Gotham Bold, but heavily customized
  • Tools: Adobe Photoshop
  • Total Layers Used: 30

Great texture, the font is a little to glossy for my liking though.

Now that’s solid… amazing depth in design.. love it … but I feel it lacks colour (a bit :| when compared to Shine On)

Yes, it does lack color, but that was on purpose. I wanted a wallpaper that was mostly black and white so that’s what I created. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about it.

I agree, I always like it when a designer shows how he accomplished the effects in his work. I will try my best to do that to the wallpapers that I upload in the future. I think it gives the viewer a little more insight. :)

Love the fact that you ‘experimented’ on this. Also really dig the way you show the project’s progression. Nice work.

Thanks Jeremy. “Experimenting” is something that I have been doing for a while and it’s great! I learned everything through experimentation.

Very nice wallpaper – Though the mac angle is not something I am so much excited about, and why not a 1600×1200 :)

Otherwise I chose to retweet this because it is a great shot, it is an original work, and it is part of who you are, I try and make it a point to retweet those who keep it real.

Thanks! I totally forgot to include 1600×1200. I will definitely try to remember that for the next issue of “Wallpaper of the Week.” Thanks for retweeting! Much appreciated.
