Design Informer Has Changed
For a little while now, this website has been feeling a bit neglected. Well, that’s all about to change. Design Informer will see some exciting days ahead. Over the last few weeks, through a number of emails and brainstorming chat sessions, the Smashing Magazine team and I have been planning some important changes that we would like to share with you in this post.
A Synopsis Of Design Informer
Humble Beginnings
When I first started Design Informer in October of 2009, I had no idea what the website would turn into. Really, it just started as a website where I could write about design topics that sparked my interest, experiment with my WordPress skills and make a little money on the side. It was a side project that I wanted to try out and see if I could build up.
Growing, Growing, Growing
I never imagined the website would have taken off like it did. The first month alone, I was shocked by the progress of the blog. It didn’t stop there either. The website has kept growing every single month. To date, the website has over 7,000 RSS subscribers and close to 17,000 followers on Twitter. It’s been featured on many other large blogs and websites, and I have had the privilege of being a part of many interviews to discuss the unpredicted growth of the blog.

Design Informer Gets Smashed
Needless to say, the fast growth of the website was too much for me to handle at the time. I was very busy at the time with work and school, and I simply did not have the time to maintain Design Informer. After weeks of not updating the website, I decided to do something about it, and that’s when I put the website up for sale.
When Smashing Magazine heard about it, they quickly put in an offer to purchase the website because they knew the website had real potential and already had a great community behind it. Well, I sold the website to them, and it was finally off my hands.
I continued watching the website every month to see how it was doing, and for a while, it just sat there. Vitaly and his team were too busy with their other big projects, including publishing the Smashing Book 2, that they really didn’t have the time or resources to take Design Informer to the next level. I was a little disappointed to see that something I had built from scratch was slowly deteriorating.
Change Is Coming
A Not-So-New Editor

Fast-forward a few months. I was approached again by Vitaly Friedman of Smashing Magazine. He asked if I would be interested in being the Editor of Design Informer. After a few days of pondering, I decided that this was too great an opportunity to pass up, so I took him up on the offer. I figured that with the help and experience of Smashing Magazine, we could really grow Design Informer and make a difference in the community.
After a few more emails between the two of us and a Skype session, we both agreed that we needed to push Design Informer to the next level, and the only way to do that would be to implement some changes.
A New Direction
Yes, you read that heading correctly: Design Informer has a new direction. You may be asking, “If the website is doing so well, why are you changing its direction?” Allow me to explain.
We (i.e. the Smashing Magazine team and I) want to improve the Web design community, and we have made that our goal here at Design Informer. Let me be honest with you. When I owned the website, my main goal was just to grow Design Informer. I did everything I could to achieve that, and I can say that it worked. Well, now that is no longer our goal. When Vitaly and I Skyped last week, we agreed to make Design Informer a hub for thoughtful and professional Web design articles, as well as meaningful design discussions. We will also explore the history of design and its influence on professionals today.
We plan to publish articles about the industry and about skills, choices and approaches related to design. We want designers to think about their decisions, pose questions and ask for opinions. Thus, the website won’t be focused on particular topics such as usability or programming; rather, it will discuss design as a philosophy and a craft, and explore design in a more general sense.
Sure, we’ll still publish some inspiration and current trends from the design community, but we don’t want to just show these things without addressing the decisions and ideas that went into them.
Most design articles have too much how and not enough why. We’re trying to change that.
By the way, we need your help, too. If you’re interested in writing an article for Design Informer, we would love for you to contribute! Shoot me an email at jad.limcaco [at] smashingmagazine.com and I’ll be glad to hear your ideas.
A New Section
You’ll notice in the sidebar that I’ve added a new section called Recent Notes. This will likely be the most frequently updated section of the website. It will be just quick thoughts and interesting things from around the design community that I want to share. If you’re interested in sharing your valuable opinion, then let me know and I’ll set you up to write in the Notes section as well.
A Familiar Design
While we could have accompanied these big changes with a redesign of the website, we feel that the current design and layout work well for our goals. We did make a few minor design changes here and there. You’ll notice we removed the large footer because we didn’t really see the need for it. Also, we’ve refined the Design Informer mascot in different areas. We’re not done yet; we’ll gradually work on other things around the website, because we want to consistently improve and make Design Informer the best it can be.

So, what do you think of all these changes to Design Informer? What are some design topics you’d like us to write about? Are there certain Web design philosophies or techniques that you’d like to discuss? Please let us know in the comments. Also, please leave feedback about what you like or don’t like about Design Informer’s design and what you would change. Your views and opinions are important to us, and we would love to hear from you!

August 1st, 2011 12:35 pmNice, thanks for the update, Jad. I’ve been checking in now and again for the past few months and it’s been sad to see new posts decreasing. I’ve noticed over the past few weeks your presence on twitter increasing so guessed you must be getting ready to start firing things out again… I’m looking forward to it.
Nice also to know the basis will be more about the ‘why’ instead of the ‘how’, should put an interesting angle on it all :)

August 1st, 2011 12:39 pmI appreciate your support Neil. Good observation about the DI Twitter presence. We definitely plan to be more active with producing quality content on the blog and we are also going to be very active on Twitter again! :)

August 1st, 2011 12:49 pmGood move with the Twitter thing… I don’t Tweet nearly as much as I should, but I click a lot of links tweeted by interesting people I follow.
I’ve also always appreciated that you take the time to reply to virtually every post made on DI.
Keep up the great work :)

August 1st, 2011 12:56 pmNeil, I found out that constantly tweeting highly interesting and useful links to your followers is a great way to promote your blog and build a community of followers. It’s perhaps the biggest reason for Design Informer’s growth in the early months.
Regarding replying to almost every comment, I’ve made that a point since I started and have tried. Sometimes, it’s taken a really long time, but I believe it has been worth it to do so :)

August 1st, 2011 12:56 pmDesign Informer was one of the first blogs I followed and one of the most interesting. I am glad it came back to (more) life. The new direction “design as a philosophy and a craft” is promising…
Thanks :)

August 1st, 2011 1:00 pmLaurence, that’s great to hear! Thank you for being a follower of DI, we promise to keep the site of the highest-quality.

August 1st, 2011 1:01 pmThis is great to hear, Jad. Congratulations to the whole Smashing team – Design Informer has always been a source of inspiration for me. I can see the reasons for positioning DI to err towards the “why” as well as the “how” so that content here does not overlap with that of the main Smashing Magazine site, and to go into even more depth.
I’m really excited to see what the future holds for DI – there’s so much potential now that you have an even clearer focus.
Good luck with it, I’ll be following with even closer attention :-)

August 1st, 2011 1:46 pmWe’re glad you enjoy Design Informer. Thank you for the feedback James. We appreciate it.

August 1st, 2011 1:43 pmObviously the ‘Would you like to go home’ button needs to stay :)

August 1st, 2011 1:47 pmExcept of course when you’re on the homepage. Then it goes away :)

August 1st, 2011 1:52 pmIt has been exciting to see you back in the game, Jad. The site taking off as it did in the beginning had very much to do with your friendliness and positivity. Teaming up with the Smashing crew can only mean great things.
This is going to rock.

August 1st, 2011 2:02 pmHello Dan! Man, I wish I could have attended your conference. Oh well, maybe next year! :)
As for working with the SM crew, they are awesome! I’m glad to be a part of their team.

August 1st, 2011 1:55 pmThis is very good news, and the new direction is just what the community needs more of.
For young designers it’s the “why” that really matters. Understanding the mentalities leads to more professional, thoughtful design (and a successful and enjoyable career as well!). I started a small project at http://xheight.co.uk around similar ideas and the discussion those articles have generated has been very positive.
I look forward to seeing Design Informer grow :)

August 1st, 2011 2:05 pmDavid, I ran into your blog a couple of weeks back and have really enjoyed the articles there. Maybe if I have some time, I might even comment on some of them.
You’re spot on with your comment. Too many designers now are just always looking for how to achieve a certain design effect or style and there’s not enough on the “why.”
Thank you for your thoughts!

August 1st, 2011 3:12 pmLooking forward to seeing more and more of (and contributing to) DI as it grows further :)

August 1st, 2011 2:34 pmGreat news. I could use a quality site with talk about designing in a respectful way. I hate those forums where people bitch around trying to prove who’s garden hose’s the longest :)
Jad Limcaco
August 1st, 2011 7:50 pmYes sir, that’s what we try to do here at Design Informer. Even before, my goal was to always make the discussions here at Design Informer as friendly as possible. We can have a discussion, but we don’t have to have an argumentative spirit while doing so.

August 1st, 2011 2:50 pmI had never heard of this site before, but fittingly enough I just clicked through here from a smashing tweet. The community seems nice and active, and I very much like the gist of this post. I’ll make sure to check in every so often.
Jad Limcaco
August 1st, 2011 7:52 pmNils, definitely check back in the next few weeks as we publish new articles! :)
Yes, the community was very active here on Design Informer and it’s already picking back up. I’m sure it will definitely be even more so in the upcoming months. Thanks for the nice comment! Glad you saw the tweet from SM and decided to click through.

August 1st, 2011 3:19 pmI’m excited to hear about these changes Jad + Vitaly. I must admit that when Design Informer started two years ago, I lumped it in with a bunch of other blogs that published list posts and articles with stock photography.
I love how Smashing responded a few years ago and am happy to hear this site is attempting something similar. As some of the previous comments already hinted, I’m looking forward to reading less-frequent, higher quality posts here.
Cheers!
Jad Limcaco
August 1st, 2011 7:54 pmHello Ted, I’ve seen you around the Twitterverse before. BTW, we did publish list posts before but we’ve also had some really great articles and content in the past. If you take a look at the sidebar, the most popular posts on Design Informer mostly are articles with a lot of thought and effort that went behind it.
On another note, I checked out some of your side projects on your website and they’re great. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing you around here more often ;)

August 1st, 2011 6:59 pmThis is great news Jad! Glad to hear that you and Vitaly have worked together to take Design Informer in a new and exciting direction, looking forward to see the site grow!

August 1st, 2011 7:54 pmMuch appreciated Gabe. It’s definitely exciting!

August 1st, 2011 11:56 pmJad, I admire your vigour in wanting to put right what you see as wrong in the recent history of DI. Many others would have sat back, happy to have achieved a buy-out.
It was a lack of regular activity on Design Informer that meant I rarely visited any more. Also I’m much more drawn to fan the “why” in design as you put it – philosophy rather than technical execution, as it were. I get a sense that this is increasingly what designers want to read rather than the lists or tutorial approach mentioned above.
I wish you every success with the change in direction.
Jad Limcaco
August 2nd, 2011 8:45 amThank you very much Rick. I definitely was content with the buy-out but then, I got really antsy and wanted to start working on Design Informer when I finally had some spare time to do it.
Well, I’m thankful that Vitaly and the SM crew has allowed me to be the editor and I definitely will do my best! :)

August 2nd, 2011 10:41 amA few times a week, I came back to see whether there were any new updates and now I’m really happy. Good work. Helps my wisdom :) No one grown this much in this short period of time.
Best of luck!

October 27th, 2011 11:34 pmGlad to see you’re back to nursing your baby (figuratively speaking of course, lol). It’s always been an awesome site, and I can’t wait to see the changes to come.. Cheers :-)
